ATLANTA FOUR YEARS ago in Barcelona, Ron Karnaugh was a shattered hero at the Olympic Games.
His father, Peter, died of a heart attack sitting with family in the stands during opening ceremonies, watching his son march in the parade.

Ron swam in the meter individual medley less than a week later, finishing sixth, then wore his father’s hat outside the deck area to honor his dad.
The media turned Karnaugh into a symbol of courage and grace. His story was so appealing, George Steinbrenner offered him a scholarship to medical school.
