You could almost say he needs no introduction. Famous and familiar for his nearly 20 years as manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers, Lasorda was the personification of the Dodgers and baseball’s best-known ambassador. Profane or charming, pugnacious or proud, outrageous or simply outspoken, Lasorda could be all these and more.
Lasorda’s major-league career was nearly as brief as that of his Dodger predecessor Walter Alston, who struck out in his only big-league at-bat.
Lasorda compiled a record of 0-4 with the Brooklyn Dodgers and the Kansas City Athletics in the mid-1950s to go with his career 58 1/3 innings pitched.1 But despite an outstanding minor-league career, it wasn’t Lasorda’s pitching that would lead to his greatness.
Thomas Charles Lasorda was born in Norristown, Pennsylvania, just northwest of Philadelphia, on September 22, 1927.
